Psyllium Husk: Psyllium is rich in dietary fibre, providing the extra fibre that so many people need in order to maintain regular and healthy bowels. Psyllium Husk is a water absorbing / retention fibre which gives bulk to stools by
absorbing water - as much as 25 times it's own weight. This gives the bowel wall something to work on and lets it push matter through smoothly and quickly via peristalsis. Fibre also stimulates natural bacteria in the bowel. Traditionally most fibre in our diet comes from wheat bran but for people with food intolerance and sensitive cell walls, the rough wheat bran can cause irritation and sometimes make matters worse.
When water is added to psyllium husks, a soft gel is formed helping the unwanted matter in the colon to move through smoothly, with no straining or discomfort. This process is also the basis of Colon Cleansing and Detox Programmes as over a period of time it can help to remove unwanted and impacted faecal matter from the walls of the colon.
Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS): these are non-digestible carbohydrates or sugars that occur naturally in a wide variety of foods throughout the plant kingdom in vegetables such as Beets. Friendly bacteria thrive and multiply on FOS (also know as Bifido growth factor) or vegetable inulin.
FOS is a source of dietary fibre, helps optimise gut movement, bulk in stool and gut pH.
These 'friendly bacteria' or probiotics in the digestive tract enhance the digestion and absorption of nutrients, detoxification and elimination processes and help boost the immune system. As FOS feed these probiotics, it is known as a Prebiotic. Studies in the USA & Japan have shown they also help to suppress the production of intestinal putrefactive substances and have a beneficial effect on cholesterol levels, along with the absorption action of Psyllium.
L-Glutamine: is a very important amino acid, required by the human body for many repair and maintenance functions such as:
* Maintains tissue integrity of the Digestive System
* Provides fuel to the brain
* Supports the immune system
* Helps to maintain & repair muscle tissue
The digestive system (stomach, small intestine & bowel) wall lining is constantly being eroded and irritated by food particles, parasites, medication yeast etc. Over time small holes can develop in the gut lining, thus permitting potentially harmful substances to enter your body commonly known as 'leaky gut'.
L-Glutamine feeds the gut wall cells, enabling constant replacement
& repair and thus protecting against Leaky Gut Syndrome.
Digestive Enzymes Blend: enzymes have been added to help support the body's digestive system following food intake.
Digestive enzymes break down the foods we eat - nutrients are better absorbed if food is digested properly and the likelihood of developing bloating, flatulence, indigestion etc is reduced.
* Amylase - digests carbohydrates
* Protease digests proteins
* Invertase Breaks down sucrose to fructose & glucose
* Alpha Galactosidase - to aid digestion of problematic starches in beans and some vegetables
* Hemi Cellulase- see cellulase
* Phytase - an enzyme that can break down the indigestible phytic acid (phytate) part found in grains & oil seeds
* Lipase fat digestion. People with Pancreatic Insufficiency require Lipase
* Cellulase breaks down cellulose. Does not occur naturally in the human digestive tract.
Fennel Seed: a gentle warming agent for delicate stomachs. Is a carminative, aromatic, antispasmodic, digestive and a gut soother. Helps to reduce wind & regulate bowel movements.
Ginger: actions include anti-inflammatory, carminative, antispasmodic, expectorant, vasodilator, circulatory system stimulant & anti-cholesterol. Stimulates the secretion of stomach juice and bile & lessens wind.
Peppermint: well known digestive agent, carminative, antispasmodic, antiseptic & peripheral vasodilator & enzyme activator. Source of magnesium & potassium.
Helps to soothe the gut lining, promotes gut function, regular bowel movements & reduces wind.
Probiotics: these are the friendly bugs that work for you and help your body function properly in many ways.
Health food advocates have long recommended using beneficial bacteria (probiotics) to help maintain a favourable balance of friendly bacteria in the digestive system and colon. We all have 'good' and 'bad' bacteria inside us and they are continually competing with each other for dominance.
The balance can be upset by many factors such as a course of antibiotics, contaminated food and even stress. If this imbalance isn't corrected, many common bowel ailments can result such as loose bowel, constipation or even a candida albicans yeast infection.
Studies have also confirmed that Lactobacillus Bacteria and FOS are even more effective when taken together - known as the Symbiotic effect.
